North Haven author Stephen Darley will speak about his newly published book,  Voices from a Wilderness Expedition.  Mr. Darley’s presentation, followed by a book signing and light refreshments, is free and open to the public.

This traditional Southern Italian cookie has a rich, fig dried fruit and chocolate filling encased in a buttery, lemon shortbread type pastry.  Chef Paula Biondino will teach us how to make this delightful cookie, sure to be an addition to your next cookie platter.  This program is free, but registration is required.  Please register starting February 1 at the Reference Desk.

 The North Haven Library will be hosting a class for Kindle owners.  A representative from Staples will be here on February 28, 2012 at 6:00pm in the Library’s Community Room. You will learn the basics of using the Kindle, as well as how to download the library’s collection of free ebooks.  Please have an Amazon account already set up before you attend, so that everyone can follow along together with their Kindles.

The Library has just subscribed to a new database service called AtoZdatabases.    This is a  Reference and Marketing database incuding 30 million business profiles and 220 million residents.   It is ideal for sales leads, mailing lists, employment opportunities, finding friends and relatives and much more.   AtoZdatabases is available to North Haven residents who hold a North Haven library card.    It can be accessed from the link at left under Online Resources, or directly at www.atozdatabases.com/

The North Haven Library has offered free e-book and audiobook downloads since we joined the LION library consortium in June.  The service was compatible with most e-readers, tablets, smart phones and pcs — but not with the Kindle.  We are happy to report that most e-books are now Kindle compatible.  Here is a quick guide to get you started:

• Choose a Kindle Book from the LION OverDrive site
• Select Kindle and add to cart/checkout.
• Click the ‘Get for Kindle’ button. This opens the Amazon.com website.
• Sign in with your Amazon.com account if you are not already logged in.
• Select your Kindle device or Kindle reading app. Click the ‘Get library book’ button and sync your device or app to download the book.  If your Kindle does not have Wi-Fi,  download to your PC, plug Kindle into a USB port, and drag and drop the download to the Kindle folder.
• Start reading!

From the LION Catalog, click on Login to My Account.  Type in your last name and library card barcode number.  On the left, click on the link for Reading History.  Click on Opt In, and from now on, every item you’ve checked out will appear on this list.  Happy reading, listening and viewing!
