Children’s Programs at the North Haven Library

Winter – Spring 2015

Most programs are open to North Haven residents and non-residents.  Registrations are accepted in person or by phone.  Phone registrations will not be taken prior to 10 a.m.  See program listing for details. All programs are free unless otherwise indicated.

As a courtesy to others, you must call a staff member in the Children’s Department if your child is registered for a program but cannot attend.

Failure to do so will result in your child being dropped from future programs.

 

Storytime (7sessions)

Thursday, January 8, 15, 22, 29 and February 5, 19, and 26th.  At 1:30 -2:00 p.m. (No class Feb. 12th)

Ages 3-5

Story, songs, and show and tell (please bring something for show and tell each week). Registration is required and begins on Friday, Dec. 19th at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 2nd   at 10 a.m. for non-residents

 

Baby Bounce (6 sessions)

Friday,  January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13 at 10:30 – 11 a.m.

Ages 6 – 18 months (with parent or caregiver)

Lap songs, fingerplays, music and a story.  Registration is required and begins on Friday, Dec. 19th at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 2nd   at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

Once Upon a Time – Session I

Saturdays, January 10, 17, 24, 31 at 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. (4 weeks)

Ages 5 – 8

Did you know that Paul Bunyan was a giant lumberjack who had a blue ox for a pet?   Have you ever heard the story of the elves that made shoes?  Did you know that you can make soup from stones?  Join us for a fun-filled program with stories, craft, and games. Registration is required and begins on Friday, Dec. 19th at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 2nd   at 10 a.m. for non-residents

 

Tween Talk – 1st meeting

Monday,  January 12 at 6:30-7:15p.m.

Grades 5 – 8

This is a book club dedicated to tweens who love to discuss books. Here’s the place to talk, read, and have fun.  Members of this group will have first dibs on the library’s newest books. After reading the book of your choice, you will then have the opportunity to share your opinions with others.  Please pick up the book of your choice from our newest selection and read this book before the group meets. Registration is required and begins on Friday, January 2nd   at 10 a.m.

 

Zumba (6 sessions)

Tuesdays, Jan. 13 – Feb. 17 at 4:15 – 5:00 p.m.

Grades 4 – 8

Zumba is a great workout that is fun, effective, and made for everyone!  This high energy class is an excellent cardiovascular workout; burn calories and get fit without even realizing it! Come join the Zumba party !

Registration is required and begins on Friday, Dec. 19th at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 2nd   at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

Drawing Dragons

Thursday, January 22 at 6:30 – 7:15 p.m.

Ages 7 – 11

Have you ever imagined owning a pet dragon?  This dragon could play soccer,  carry your books,  or read you a bedtime story.  Your dragon might have long claws, a fat tail, or blow purple flames.  Here’s your chance to learn some drawing skills to create any dragon you could possibly imagine! Registration is required and begins on Friday, Jan. 2nd  at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, Jan. 16th  at 10 a.m.  for non-residents.

 

Frozen Sing-a-long and Craft

Monday, January 26 at 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Ages 4 –8

Sing songs from Disney’s Frozen while making your own Elsa-inspired crown.  And who knows – maybe Queen Elsa or Princess Anna might just stop by! Registration is required and begins on Friday, January 2nd  at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 16th at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

LEGO® Fun Club

Thursday,  January 15 at 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Ages 5 – 12

Pajama Storytime

Monday,  February 2 at 6:30 – 7:30p.m.

Ages 4 – 10

Wear your jammies, grab your teddy, and come  listen to some wonderful stories.  No registration is required.  First come, first served basis.

 

Full of Joy Yoga (6 week series)

Wednesday, February 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4, 11 at 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Ages 3 ½ – 5

Yoga helps children develop strong, flexible bodies while cultivating a lifetime of joy, peace and wonder. Classes with Lani Rosen of Full of Joy Yoga, combine music, games, props and stories which give everyone the benefits of yoga.  Attendees must arrive 10 minutes prior to onset of the sessions to assist with room set up. (Clear chairs)

Registration is required and begins on Friday, January 16th   at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 23rd   at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

Magic Tree House (4 sessions)

Wednesday, February 4, 18  March 4th  and 18th at 6:30 – 7:15 p.m.

Ages 7 – 10 (without parent of caregiver)

Explore the world of Mary Pope Osborne’s popular children’s series with Jack and Annie.  At our first session on  Feb. 4th  (please read the book “ Abe Lincoln at Last” before this date) we will go back in time,  discuss the book, and build a pretzel log cabin!  The next Magic Tree House book will be announced at the end of this session. Registration is required and begins on Friday, January 16th   at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 23rd   at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

Toddler Time (5week series)

Thursdays, February 5, 19, 26, March 5, 12  at 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. (No class Feb. 12th)

Ages 1 ½ – 2½ (with a parent or caregiver)

Join Mother Goose for fingerplays, rhymes, songs and a story to delight the

little ones.   Registration is required and begins on Friday, January 16th   at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 23rd   at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

Valentine Craft

Thursday,  February 5 at 4:15 – 5:00p.m.

Ages 5 – 8 (without parent or caregiver)

Join us for a delightful story that shows that sometimes best friends are not discovered until Valentine’s Day! A craft will follow. Registration is required and begins on Friday, January 16th    at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, January 23rd  at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

Fat Tuesday Pancake Breakfast  (Schools are closed)

Tuesday, February 17th at 10:30 – 11:15a.m.

Ages 8-13

March on down to the library for a pancake breakfast made by you under the guidance of Chef Melinda.  Enjoy the festivities of Mardi Gras at this special cooking program.

Here is your chance to sing, learn fingerplays, listen to a story and make a craft based on a weekly theme.  Registration is required and begins on Friday, February 6th    at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, February 13th  at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

Chinese New Year – Year of the Sheep

Monday, February 23rd at 7:00 – 7:45p.m.

Ages 8 – 13

Start the Lunar New Year with a bang (or is it a baa?)!  This Chinese New Year celebration will include making clever and scrumptious sheep cupcakes and then end with a dragon parade!

Registration is required and begins on Friday, February 6th    at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, February 13th  at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

Art Smarts ( 3 week series)

Tuesdays, March 10th, 17th and 24th at 6:30 – 7:15

Ages 6 – 9

Calling young artists!  Bring your creativity and “meet” a famous artist each week.  You will learn about an artist and the technique they used and then create your own artwork using that technique.

Registration is required and begins on Friday, February 20th at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, February 27th at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

Luck of the Irish

Thursday, March 12 at 4:15 – 5:00 p.m.

Ages 4 – 7

One potato, two potato, three potato, four.  It’s time to celebrate potatoes!  Come hear an inspired Irish folktale and join in some potato themed fun!

Registration is required and begins on Friday, February 27th  at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, March 6th  at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

 

Sensory Storytime

Saturday, March 14 at 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Ages 4 – 10 and their family

Sensory Storytime is a new interactive program geared specifically for children with special needs ages 4 – 10.  This storytime, designed to engage kids through movement, music, stories and sensory activity play, is ideal for children with autism spectrum disorders, those who are sensitive to sensory overload or for children who have difficulty sitting still. We hope to provide a welcoming, encouraging, and supportive place for you and your child. Registration is required and begins on Friday, Friday, February 27th  at 10 a.m. for residents and non-residents.

Join our Harry Potter Horcrux Hunt! Can you find all 7 horcruxes?  Take part in this adventurous scavenger hunt and find all 7 hidden objects just like Harry!

Retro Toy and Game Day (School Vacation Week)

Monday April 13 at 2 p.m  – 4 p.m.

Ages 5-10

It’s retro toy and game time! Send Slinky sliding down the stairs or try your hand at great classic games from Jacks to jump rope. Play with our retro toys like Etch a Sketch or our View-Master reels all making a comeback from the “good old days.”   Registration is required and begins on Friday, March 20th at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, March 27th   at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

Magic Show with Chick Kelman (School Vacation Week)

Tuesday, April 14th at 10:30 – 11:30

Ages 5 – 14

Join us for a fun-filled show as Magician Chick Kelman amazes and astounds the audience with a combination of both close-up and stand-up magic tricks. Registration is required and begins on Friday, March 20th at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, March 27th  at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

 

 

 

Flight School  (3week series)

Tuesdays,  April 14, 21, 28 at 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Ages 9-13

Explore the science of flight and air related principles through hands-on activities, simple science experiments and cool demonstrations. Here’s your chance to make a stomp rocket, propel a helicopter, and fly your own plane!

Princess Tea Party

Wednesday, April 15 at 10:30 a.m– 11:15 a.m.

Ages 5 – 9

Come dressed as your favorite princess or wear your fanciest clothes and enjoy a spot of tea!  Cupcakes will be served, but help is needed with the frosting!  Be prepared to receive the royal treatment!
