 Programs for Children & Tweens
 Summer 2016

Programs are open to both North Haven residents and non-residents. You may register online with the North Haven Library Events Calendar at the upper left, in person, or by phone at 203-239-5803. Phone registrations will not be taken prior to 10 am.  See program listing for details. All programs are free.

As a courtesy to others, you must call a staff member in the Children’s Department if your child is registered for a program but cannot attend.

Failure to do so will result in your child being dropped from future programs.

SUMMER READING 2016: THE MAP OF IMAGINARY PLACES
REGISTRATION BEGINS JUNE 1ST

Children aged 4 – 14 can stop by the Children’s Department to register for the 2016 Summer Reading Club. While you’re here to register, play our Summer Reading Preview Game throughout the Children’s Department where you are the player and the game piece!

 Friday, June 3

Drop-in Baby Bounce @ 10:30 a.m.

   Ages 0 – 18 months – Infants and their caregivers will share nursery rhymes, songs, fingerplays and books. This interactive playtime emphasizes language enrichment and pre-literacy skills. This is a drop-in program. No registration required.

Tuesday, June 7

Tutu Tuesday @ 10:30 a.m.  

Ages 12 – 36 months Time for too-too much fun on Tuesday at the Library. If you, your baby or toddler have a tutu (or bow tie), wear it to add to the fun.  Enjoy music, dancing, story and playtime. Registration required and begins Friday, May 27th for Residents and Friday, June 3rd for Non-Residents.

Friday, June 10

Toddler Time @ 10:30 a.m.

Ages 18 – 30 months  Come play and learn! Parent/ Caregiver and toddlers interact with books, learn fingerplays and enjoy music. Following class, enjoy social playtime to get to know one another. Registration required and begins Friday, May 27th for Residents and Friday, June 3rd for Non-Residents.

Pokémon Club  @ 3:30 p.m.  

Ages 6-12 Do you have what it takes to be a Pokémon Master? Drop in and play Pokémon with your peers and make new friends! Bring your own cards. No registration required.

Wednesday, June 15

Messy Fun Time: Homemade Play-Doh  @ 3:30

Ages 6 – 9 with adult – Get your hands dirty and have some fun as we all work together to make a large batch of play-dough. Each child will be given a small piece to color and make to take home. Wear something that you can get messy in! Registration required and begins Friday, June 3rd for Residents and Friday, June 10th for Non-Residents.

Monday, June 20

Canvas Club for Tweens and Teens @ 6:30 p.m.

Ages 10 -14 – Are you a budding artist or would you like to learn? No painting experience is necessary to join our Canvas Club! This class will focus on painting a summer landscape scene. See what you can accomplish with a blank canvas, some paint, and your imagination! Paint and supplies will be provided. Acrylic paint will stain, so please dress in old clothes.    Registration required and begins Friday, June 10th for Residents and Friday, June 17th for Non-Residents.

Lego™ Club  @ 3:30 p.m.  

Ages 4 – 12 Drop by the library and create with LEGO™! We provide the LEGOs™ and you provide the creativity! No registration required.

Pokémon Club  @ 6:30 p.m.  

Ages 6-12 Do you have what it takes to be a Pokémon Master? Drop in and play Pokémon with your peers and make new friends! Bring your own cards. No registration is required.

 Friday, June 24

Parachute Playtime @ 10:30 a.m.  

Ages 2 -6 Get some energy out by shakin’ our parachute. Enjoy classics like Wheels on the Bus and Old MacDonald and dance to new favorites! This loosely structured, gross-motor activity class is for children aged 2-6 with an adult. Registration required and begins Friday, June 10th for Residents and Friday, June 17th for Non-Residents.

Monday, June 27

Jr. Canvas Class @ 6:30 p.m.

Ages 6-9 Calling all junior artists: Learn to paint a summer scene at Junior Paint Class. You don’t need to know how to paint in order to participate. Just bring your imagination and good listening skills. Miss Lindsey will teach you how! Paint and supplies will be provided. Acrylic paint will stain, so please dress in old clothes. Registration required and begins Friday, June 17th for Residents and Friday, June 24th for Non-Residents.

Teen Reading Club: Pizza Party @ 1:00 p.m.

Ages: Entering Middle – High School   Hey Kids – you have to read anyway for school this summer.  Why not join the Teen Reading Club and count your 30 minutes of daily reading  in July and earn  raffle tickets  towards chances to win gift card prizes.  Join the Kick Off Pizza Party, Thurs. June 30th at 1:00 to start theTeen Reading Club. Please Register for the Pizza Party online at www.northhavenlibrary.net  or call 203-239-5803 before June 28th to reserve your spot for this event! Attendees at the Pizza Party Kick-Off will receive 3 additional raffle tickets.

Cooking: Independence Day Regal Eagle Cookies @ 5:30 p.m.

Ages 6 – 9 Celebrate Independence Day and decorate a cookie inspired by our nation’s most famous bird. ALLERGY ALERT: Ingredients include Vanilla frosting, Pepperidge Farm Milano Cookie, Coconut, Cashew and Almond. Registration required and begins Friday, June 17th for Residents and Friday, June 24thfor Non-Residents.

Ages 3 – 6 Power up with stories, songs, flannel boards and more to encourage the development of early literacy skills in young children. Registration required and begins Friday, June 17th for Residents and Friday, June 24th for Non-Residents.

Tom Stankus, a.k.a T-Bone, will whisk away the audience on a fun-filled tropical adventure through songs, stories, instrument, and games. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the library’s community room. No registration required.

Wacky Wednesday  @ 4:30 p.m.

Ages 2 – 4 Let’s make a silly craft using everyday items and imagination. Story, songs and silliness a must.  Registration required and begins Friday, July 1st for Residents and Friday, July 8th for Non-Residents.

Thursday, July 14

Sharpie Tie-Dye @ 3:30 p.m.  

Ages 6 – 9 with adult – Come in and experiment with Sharpie Tie-Dye! Learn a new way to tie-dye a t-shirt with permanent ink. Bring a plain white T-shirt in your size. We’ll provide the Sharpies and the instruction- you provide the imagination! Registration required and begins Friday, July 1st  for Residents and Friday, July 8th  for Non-Residents.

Cooking: Pancake Party @ 6:30 p.m.

Ages 6 – 9
Take a break, stay awake and partake to make some griddlecakes. Registration required and begins Friday, July 1st  for Residents and Friday, July 8th  for Non-Residents.

Friday, July 15

All Ages – Bring a picnic supper and enjoy family entertainment on the North Haven Library Lawn. Enthusiasm is catching! Al DeCant engages the audiences in an interactive program of dancing, singing, clapping, marching and playing percussive instruments. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the library’s community room. No registration is required.

She Sells Sea Shells @ 3:30p.m.  

Ages 6 – 9 Discover beautiful seashells and sea animals from the New England shores as well as other regions. Story craft and games. Registration is required and begins on Friday, July 8th   for Residents and Friday, July 15th for Non-Residents.

Wednesday, July 20

Messy Fun Time: “Owlsome” Tube Owls @ 3:30 p.m. 

Ages 6 – 9 with adult – Come in and create your very own “Owlsome” tube owl out of up-cycled materials. It’s a real hoot! Registration required and begins Friday, July 8th  for Residents and Friday, July 15th for Non-Residents.

Anime Tomodachi!
For Teens and Tweens Who Love Anime @ 2:30 p.m.

Ages 10 -14 – Hang out and watch an Anime film with your friends and other teens who appreciate Japanese culture. Treats will be provided.  ^_^ Our first film will be Studio Ghibli’s “The Secret World of Arriety” which is based on the book, “The Borrowers” by Mary Norton. The story is about a family of tiny people who secretly live in the walls of a human house. Registration required and begins Friday, July 8th   for Residents and Friday, July 15th for Non-Residents.

Picnic and Performance: Les Julian @ 7:00 p.m.

All Ages – Bring a picnic supper and enjoy family entertainment on the North Haven Library Lawn. Join singer and songwriter Les Julian as he presents his show, WE ALL LAUGH IN THE SAME LANGUAGE. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the library’s community room. No registration is required.

Henna Tattoo Tutorial @ 3:30 p.m. 

Ages 11-18 Transform your hand into a work of art using Henna temporary tattoo designs! Miss Lindsey will teach you how to apply a design that will last approximately two weeks on your skin. Henna will permanently stain fabric, so please wear old clothing to this workshop. Registration required and begins Friday, July 15th   for Residents and Friday, July 22nd for Non-Residents.

Join us as we learn about dry ice and the changing states of matter through the tale of “Dragons & Dreams.” Wouldn’t dragon’s breath be an amazing sight to see?! Get ready to see, feel, smell and maybe even taste it! This story features interactive and explosive experiments with dry ice, fog, bubbles, flying rockets and more. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the library’s community room.  No registration is required.
