Children’s Programs — Fall 2014

Most programs are open to North Haven residents and non-residents.  Registrations are accepted in person or by phone.  Phone registrations will not be taken prior to 10 a.m.  See program listing for details. All programs are free unless otherwise indicated.

As a courtesy to others, you must call a staff member in the Children’s Department if your child is registered for a program but cannot attend.  Failure to do so will result in your child being dropped from future programs.

 

Parent – Daughter Book Discussion

In the 1920s, a Chinese youth from the country comes to Chungking with his mother where

the bustling city offers adventure and his apprenticeship to a coppersmith brings good fortune.

 

Open to girls and their parent or caregiver. Open to residents and non-residents.  Registration is on-going. Please call to register.

 

Baby Bounce

Friday,  October 3, 10, 17 & 24 at 10:30 – 11 a.m.

Ages 6 – 18 months (with parent or caregiver)

Lap songs, fingerplays, music and a story.  Registration is required and begins on Friday, September 19th   at 10 a.m. for residents  and for non- residents on Friday, September 26th  at 10 a.m.

 

Parent and Me Yoga (6 week series)

Wednesday, October 8, 15, 22, 29 November 5 & 12 at 10:30 – 11:00

Ages 3 ½  -  5

Yoga helps children develop strong, flexible bodies while cultivating a lifetime of joy, peace and wonder. Classes with Lani Rosen of Full of Joy Yoga, combine music, games, props and stories to give everyone all the benefits of yoga. Join your child as you both stretch and relax.

Attendees must arrive 10 minutes prior to onset of the sessions to assist with room set up. (Clear chairs)

Registration is required and begins on Friday, September 19th   at 10 a.m. for residents and for non- residents on Friday, September 26th at 10 a.m.

 

Toddler Time (4 week series)

Thursdays, October 9, 16, 23 & 30  at 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Ages 1 ½ – 2½ (with a parent or caregiver)

Join Mother Goose for fingerplays, rhymes, songs and a story to delight the

little ones.   Registration is required and begins on Friday, September 19th   at

10 a.m. for residents  and for non- residents on Friday, September 26th  at 10 a.m.

Nappy’s Puppets: Spooky-Silly Sing-A-Long with Jim Napolitano

Saturday, October 11 at 2:00 p.m.

Ages 4 – 10

Get ready to sing-a-long with some familiar yet decidedly spooky classic

childrens songs such as: I’m a Mummy, Little Bunny Foo-Foo, The Old Lady

Who Swallowed a Bone and Five Little Mummies Jumpin’ on the Bed

 

People might not recognize Jim Napolitano even though he is broadcast to millions of television sets nationwide. That’s because as a puppeteer he spends most of his time out of the camera’s view. His television credits include Between the Lions on PBS, The Book of Pooh on the Disney Channel and the new cartoon Kirby, on Fox. Jim is a graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Puppet Arts Program and a native of Milford, Connecticut.

Spooky Science (2 week series)

Tuesdays, October 14 & 21 at 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Ages 7-11

Come join our spooky hands-on science program.  Explore scientific properties and processes with a fun Halloween theme!  Registration is required and begins on Friday, September 26th at 10 a.m. for residents and for non- residents on Friday, October 3rd   at 10 a.m.

 

LEGO® Fun – Haunted Mansions

Thursday,  October 16th at 6:30 p.m.

Ages 5 – 12

Let’s create spooky houses with LEGO! We provide the LEGO and you provide the imagination!  No registration required.

 

A Touch of Magic

Monday, October 20th at 7 p.m.

Ages 9 – 12

Learn how to perform magic tricks with members of the Society of American Magicians-Wallingford Assembly.  Have fun entertaining your friends and family after learning some magic secrets.  You will be the hit of your next party! Registration is required and begins on Friday, September 26th   at 10 a.m. for residents and for non- residents on Friday, October 3rd at 10 a.m.

 

Welcome to Hogwarts

Monday, October 27 at 6:30 – 7:15 p.m.

Ages 8-12

Get sorted into a Hogwarts house, brew your own potion, and have some pumpkin juice in this Harry Potter-themed program! Registration is required and begins on Friday, October 10th at 10 a.m. for residents  and for non- residents on Friday,  October 17th at 10 a.m.

 

Friday Fun  (4 week series)

Fridays, October 31, November 7, 14, 21 at 10:30–11 a.m.

Ages 2 ½ – 3 ½ (with  parent or caregiver)

Here is your chance to sing, learn fingerplays, listen to a story  and make a craft based on a weekly theme.

Super Hero Week

 

Super Heroes in the Kitchen (4 week series)

Monday, November 3, 10, 17 & 24 at 6:30 – 7:15 p.m.

Ages 8 -11 (without parent or caregiver)

Your mom and dad will think you are a super hero when you cook them a special treat.  Learn how to make a new recipe each week.  Registration is required and begins on Friday, October 24th at 10 a.m. for residents  and for non- residents on Friday, October 31st  at 10 a.m.

 

Caped Crusaders

Tuesday, November 4 at 3:30 p.m.

Ages 5-8

Make your own Super Hero mask and cape! Create one based on your favorite Super Hero, or make your own. Registration is required and begins on Friday, October 24th   at 10 a.m. for residents  and for non- residents on Friday, October 31st at 10 a.m.

 

LEGO® Fun – Super Hero Lairs

Tuesday, November 4th at 6:30 p.m.

Ages 5 – 12

Let’s create Super Hero lairs with LEGO! We provide the LEGOs and you provide the imagination!  No registration required.

 

Super Hero Drawing                                      

Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Ages 7-11

Learn some basic drawing skills and then design your own Super Hero car. Registration is required and begins on Friday, October 24th   at 10 a.m. for residents and for non- residents on Friday, October 31st  at 10 a.m.

 

Super Hero  Training Camp

Saturday, November 8th at 2pm

Ages 4 – 10

An amazing and  incredible way to end our Super Hero Week!  Play Villain Bowling, bulk up at our Super Hero Gym, and play other games to test your Super Hero Powers!  Meet and greet with some of your favorite Super Heroes.  Registration is required and begins on Friday, October 24th   at 10 a.m. for residents  and for non- residents on Friday, October 31st  at 10 a.m.

 

Music and Movement (5 week series)

Tuesday, November 18 & 25 December 2, 9, 16 at 4:15 – 5:00 p.m.

Ages 4 – 6

Gerry Parent, singer and songwriter, will teach music, movement, and storybook dance for children.  Children will explore rhythmic movements and songs through a variety of props, such as percussion instruments, hoops, scarves, and parachute.   Registration is required and begins on Friday, October 31st   at 10 a.m. for residents  and for non- residents on Friday, November 7th at 10 a.m.

 

Music Together

Babies – Age 5 (with parent or caregiver)

Thursday, December 4th

Session I – 10:15 –11:00

Session II – 11:00 – 11:45

Making music as a family is so much fun!  Come and experience a Music Together class. This innovative program engages the entire family- play, observe, discover and create musical memories! Sign up for Session I or II.  Registration is required and begins on Friday, November 21st  at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, November 28th  at 10 a.m. for non-residents.

 

LEGO® Fun -  Holiday Creations

December 11th at 6:30 p.m.

Ages 5-12

Let’s create something for the holidays with LEGO! We provide the LEGO and you provide the imagination!  No registration required.

 

Gingerbread Houses

Monday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Ages 4 –14

Gingerbread houses are a favorite holiday tradition.  Decorate a gingerbread house using candy, frosting, and marshmallows. Material fee – $2.00 payable at registration.  For this program, you must register in person. Material fee due at the time of registration. Registration is required and begins on Friday, November 21st  at 10 a.m. for residents and Friday, November 28th  at 10 a.m. for non-residents.
